De-Linking the Home Address

Off the Radar · Lesson 4 of 10

Watch the field rule first. The written version is right below it.

Not One Record, a Dozen That Agree

Your address is not one record. It is a dozen records that all agree with each other. Property filings, utilities, the voter file, vehicle registration, deliveries, and every broker that already copied them. You do not delete an address. You cut links, one at a time.

The Plate Is Restricted, Not Private

Start with the one most people get wrong. A license plate is not private. It is restricted. The federal Driver's Privacy Protection Act limits who may pull personal information out of state motor-vehicle records, and then it lists the exceptions.

Those exceptions include licensed private investigators and security services. That is the industry I work in, and I would rather tell you plainly than let you believe a statute is protecting you. Plan on the plate being a live line to your door.

Partial Steps, Named Honestly

Moving the house into a trust or a company is a real step, and it is one step. Going forward, the property record shows a different owner. The utility account, the voter file, delivery records, and every broker inventory already holding the link are untouched. Treat it as partial, because it is.

A number of states, Florida among them, run an Address Confidentiality Program. It provides a legal substitute address for use in government records, with your mail forwarded to you. Florida has operated one since 1998, administered through the Attorney General's office.

But eligibility is written into statute and tied to victimization. In Florida, that means domestic violence. It is a victim services program, not a privacy option you elect. If you qualify, it is among the strongest tools that exists. If you do not, it is not yours to use.

Which leaves the honest picture for nearly everyone. Property records are public by default in most places. Daniel's Law style protection covers a narrow, defined class of people. The rest of us cut links.

So work it as a list rather than as a search for the one fix. For each record: which one carries the address, who publishes it, and is there a route to change it. An opt-out reaches a broker's copy. It never reaches the county filing or the motor-vehicle record the copy came from.

Knowledge Check

What can an opt-out not reach?

You have filed opt-outs against the named people-search sites. Name two records that publish your home address which those opt-outs cannot reach, and say why.
